Can Playing TheSims2 cause my computer to overheat?

I played TheSims2 without the cpu’s side panel. With a fan blowing into the cpu. No problem, but without the fan blowing into the computer after several minutes of game play the system will automatically shutdown.
Running a fan on it with the side panel open continually allows the system to stay alive and I can play TheSims2 Endlessly. No other program causes the system to shut down but TheSims2. All fans in my computer, 3, in fact, are functioning normally.

Overheating is a common problem when playing heavy games on older computer.
If your fans are weak or full of dust the problem becomes worse.

What are the specs of your computer? It might be the video card that is overheating.
